Iphone 3G, disable carrier settings

Long time havent update / review about gadget encounter or provide some view on the latest gadget on the street.

Recently, with the much awaiting Iphone 3G launching in Malaysia has finally launched by Maxis. However, some industry watcher has been thinking other operator might follow suite as is not an exclusive deal in Malaysia. Well, i guess we shall wait and see, especially Maxis package has been NOT so ATTRACTIVE for the low usage customer. (Well, Iphone has been label as an high end phone, probably if every tom, dick & harry owning on, it will not be so "high end" anymore.)

I wish to share some tips & tricks for those Iphone 3G user (especially on Maxis or carrier supported country) where their APN settings has been hidden from changing thus hamper the trick to disable data connection (of course, Jailbreak can solve this problem). This tips are for those who prefer to stick to original firmware.

1. Download the Iphone Enterprise Configuration tools, from Apple official site. Link:- MAC, PC
2. Create a new “Configuration Profile” and click on the “Advanced Setting” to set the APN information for EDGE/3G (an invalid APN will render the data connection failed to connect.
3. After you have done that export the profile, send it as email to your iphone and install it as instructed on the screen.
4. Reboot the phone (Home + Power Button simultaneously)
5. Test by connecting to the internet with certain apps (eg. Maps, Stocks, Weather , etc)

yellowsn0w! - Software unlock for lock iphone user

Happy New Year 2009!!!!

I guess one of the most anticapated stuff in 2009 for lock iphone 3G user will be yellowsn0w!! Dev-team has been succesfully create JB (jailbreak) for iphone 3G. From the latest blog release, it has been known that the latest FW 2.2 baseband 02.28 has been supported for JB. Contary the the previous statement that user should stick will the old baseband to future JB unlocking. ( I guess is a good news for ppl that accidentally / not knowingly about this upgraded to the latest FW 2.2 from itunes.)

Here is the content from the dev team blog:-
Don't eat yellowsn0w!

Hello all,

We wish you a very happy, healthy, and hopeful 2009!

We’re about to release the yellowsn0w 3G unlock application, and we have some information that you may find useful:

BASICS

  • The unlock about to be released works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple.  You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites.  Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet.  This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.
  • The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot.  It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset.  You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works.  It’s a small program and unobtrusive.  There is no GUI (this is by design).
  • You can add the application using the sources outlined below (coming soon). There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.
  • yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

DETAILS

  • There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus.  These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes.  Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue.  We’re working on a better fix.
  • For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you.  So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
  • After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed.  Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more.   If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more.  This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

RANDOM

  • The application is version 0.9.  This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.
  • The application is released on a non-commerical basis.  Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.
  • Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.
  • Happy 2009 and enjoy!

The iPhone 3G is used all over the world with all sorts of SIM cards, and we almost certainly will see untested and unexpected situations.  If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient.  This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can :)

Sign of Iphone 3G in Malaysia Apple Store

Is this a sign of Iphone3G in Malaysia, Malaysia Apple Store now have a link label 'Shop Iphone', what could that mean? After clicking inside, the link is not complete or redirecting to Asia general site at this moment

Is long awaited going to be landed in Malaysia soon? Currently Apple Iphone is not on the list of upcoming country, could that be a next year Q1 release?

Many questions has yet being answered, such as which telco carried the phone? un-lock or lock version? pricing structure? contract, prepaid or outright purchase is allowed?..etc

*****Updated: "Shop Iphone" link has been taken down from the Malaysia Apple Store site*****

iPhone 3G hits US market today - Maxis Malaysia offer at competitve price below RM1000?

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 ─ Apple today begins selling the iPhone 3G to replace earlier and slower models.
Touted as twice the speed, half the price, the 3G model has the same 8GB capacity as the EDGE iPhone but comes with new features such as enterprise applications and GPS.
The phone was Apple's entry into the crowded and competitive mobile phone sector dominated by Finnish giant Nokia and several Korean and Taiwanese makers.
But the iPhone integrated Apple's successful and iconic Ipod MP3 player with touch screen features and the company's famed industrial design to gain market share and appeal to a younger set.
The iPhone 3G will be available in a few Asian nations soon, most of whom have already cracked earlier sets which were tied to US provider AT&T.
Its understood that Maxis will offer the iPhone 3G in Malaysia at a competitive price below RM1,000.
